Prompting for Architectural Imagery

The quality of AI-generated architectural imagery depends entirely on how you prompt. Vague prompts produce generic results. Precise architectural prompts produce stunning, usable concepts.

**The Architecture Prompt Framework: SPACE** - **S**tyle: Architectural style, period, aesthetic (Brutalist, Parametric, Scandinavian minimal, etc.) - **P**rogram: Building type and function (single-family residence, cultural center, office tower) - **A**tmosphere: Lighting, mood, time of day, weather, materiality - **C**ontext: Site, landscape, urban/rural, climate, surroundings - **E**xecution: Rendering style, camera angle, level of detail, medium

**Amateur prompt:** "Modern house" — Result: Generic glass box.

**Expert prompt:** "Rammed earth residence nestled into a desert hillside in Scottsdale, Arizona. Single story, 3000 sq ft, flat roof with deep overhangs. Floor-to-ceiling glazing facing north toward mountain views. Courtyard plan with native landscaping. Warm afternoon light, golden hour. Architectural photography style, eye-level perspective, shallow depth of field. Inspired by Rick Joy and Studio Rick Joy." — Result: Stunning, specific, usable concept image.

**Key modifiers that improve architectural results:** - "Architectural photography" or "architectural visualization" (forces realistic proportions) - Specific architect references (Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor style) - Material callouts (Corten steel, board-formed concrete, charred cedar) - Camera specifications (drone view, eye-level, section perspective) - "Award-winning architecture" (biases toward high-quality composition)

💪 Practical Exercise

Choose a current project. Write 3 prompts using SPACE for different concept directions — one minimal, one bold/expressive, one contextual/vernacular. Generate all 3 in Midjourney. Pin them side by side and evaluate which direction has the most potential.
